From Homework to Leadership...Grit Your Teeth and Grind Through

Writer's picture: J.D. MillerJ.D. Miller

Homework: not exactly anyone's idea of a good time, right? I sat down with my daughter to tackle her school assignments, and let’s be real—neither of us was thrilled about it. But here’s the thing: it’s not about loving the grind, it’s about embracing it.

Whether it’s dreaded story problems or business challenges, none of us love the process all the time. But as executives, we know the grind is where the magic happens. It’s the consistent push, the late nights, and the moments of problem-solving that build something greater.

The same lessons apply to both: patience, persistence, and the power of showing up. Helping my daughter with her homework reminded me of the value of doing the work, even when it's tough.

For our teams and our careers, the grind might not be glamorous, but it builds resilience, strengthens our abilities, and brings us closer to success.

Like our kid's homework... leading our teams as executives has similar steps...

1. Success is built through consistent effort, not shortcuts.

2. Embrace the tough moments—they're where growth happens.

3. Leadership is about showing up for the grind, both personally and professionally.

What’s been your grind? How has it made you a stronger leader or professional? Email me... I want to hear more jd@jamesdwayne.com
