Strategic Planning...Lessons Learned from Medieval Misadventures

Writer: J.D. MillerJ.D. Miller

Leading strategic planning can often feel like guiding a rowdy group of knights through the chaos of Medieval Times – and trust me, I speak from experience! My family's recent trip had us rooting for the Yellow Knight, only to watch him fall short in the battle.

But fear not, fellow strategists, for amidst the spectacle, there are invaluable lessons to be learned:

* Expect the Unexpected: Just as a sudden twist can throw off our knight's game, strategic plans can face unforeseen challenges. Flexibility and adaptability are key – whether it's a surprise rival in the market or an unexpected dragon (metaphorical, of course) to slay.

* Rally the Troops: Much like cheering for our gallant knight, rallying our team behind the strategic vision is crucial. Whether it's inspiring speeches or waving foam swords (figuratively, of course), energizing our team ensures we charge into battle with full force. (My son even told the Yellow Knight that he gave him the power of Merlin to win. Kudos to YK for acknowledging James and even thanking him).

* Embrace the Journey: Despite our Yellow Knight's defeat, the thrill of the Medieval Times experience through my kids eyes was undeniable. Similarly, strategic planning is a journey, not just a destination. Celebrate the victories, learn from the defeats, and cherish the camaraderie forged along the way.

My fellow strategists, brace yourselves! Let’s equip our metaphorical armor, hone our wit, and gallop headlong into the strategic battlefield. May the lessons of Medieval Times guide us as we joust with spreadsheets and wield SWOT analyses like seasoned knights!
