Yikes! That Could Have Been Horrible!

Writer: J.D. MillerJ.D. Miller

Exec lessons from my fallen tree.

So, the other day, a massive tree decided to channel its inner lumberjack and take a dive in my yard. And guess what? It luckily missed my house by inches (as you can see from the pic below)!

This got me thinking – isn’t this just like navigating the corporate world?

Here’s how my near-miss tree incident mirrors a successful boardroom strategy:

• 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Just like I knew that tree was getting a bit precarious, successful executives keep an eye on potential issues before they become crises.

• 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: I didn’t move my house, but let’s pretend I did! In the boardroom, knowing when and where to move your assets is key.

• 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝘂𝘁: Sometimes, you’ve just got to trust that things will fall into place. (Or not fall on your house!) Successful leaders often rely on a mix of data and intuition.

• 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲: In the boardroom, keeping cool in crisis situations is critical. Just like looking out and seeing the tree down and staying calm and not panicking.

• 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘀: The tree missed my house – time to break out the confetti! Similarly, in business, when things go right, it’s important to celebrate and recognize success.

So, whether it's dodging a falling tree or navigating corporate challenges, it’s all about strategy, calmness, and a little bit of luck. So here’s to all the executives making it happen out there – may your trees always fall just right!
